The History of Women’s Underwear

When contemplating how unique my underwear design is I can’t help but think about how long we have been dealing with the same style. It has generally been the same all my life with a single layer of fabric, a second gusset layer, some with an elastic band at the top and around the legs with seams at the sides and the crotch. At some point underwear made “in the round” was introduced which are the seamless styles typically made from plastics like nylon, polyester, spandex, elastane, etc. The seamlessness of those styles is favorable but the fact they trap moisture, are plastic, and are not biodegradable make them undesirable.

I was fascinated to learn of the controversy surrounding women’s underwear but in hindsight, it comes as no surprise considering how the fight over women’s bodies and their choices is still inflamed today. The connection of underwear to prostitution was a lightbulb moment at how they are still deeply connected to the priority of being sexually alluring. More and more women are learning to make their needs a priorty and for me, that is comfort and ease. I want underwear that is completely natural, doesn’t squeeze me, and is easy to care for. Attractiveness is also a priority especially when it comes to the indentation lines caused by elastic bands. I could not find all of these elements together in one pair of underwear so I have challenged myself with designing a garment that is attractive but also comfortable and the healthiest option for our bodies.
